Databases have been restored successfully - can see tables, views etc. Left both 3 and 4 available for the DHCP server to give out since we will be expanding on the number of systems we will have connected to the network. It turned out that the MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS service had somehow got stopped. The second reason requires further investigation.
